Search Jackson County Inmates

A Jackson County inmate search shows who is currently held at the county detention center on state charges or court holds. The county jail roster is updated by the Sheriff's Office and posts a limited set of fields meant for public safety and family contact, not for full booking history. Anyone can run a Jackson County inmate lookup by name, race, sex, cell block, arrest date, held-for agency, or release date. The roster is a live operational tool, so results can change as people are booked in, released, or transferred during the day.

Jackson County Jail Roster Overview

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Darryl Forte, runs the county inmate search. The roster is hosted on the Zuercher portal at jackson-so-mo.zuercherportal.com. It draws live from the Detention Center population system. A new entry appears once intake is done and the person is housed. A row drops off after release, transfer, or court-ordered move to another facility. The county does not promise a fixed refresh interval. Treat the page as a current snapshot, not a permanent record.

The county is clear about what the roster is not. It is not an arrest record. It is not a booking record. It is not an incident report or arrest photo file. Arrest data is held by the agency that made the arrest, such as the Kansas City Police Department, Independence Police, or another local department. The Detention Center says it does not perform the booking function and keeps no booking records. The roster also leaves out people held at the Kansas City Regional Correctional Center on municipal charges, federal detainees held by the U.S. Marshals or BOP, and people in Missouri Department of Corrections custody.

The county notes the search supports public safety under the Missouri Open Records Act, Chapter 610 RSMo, but photos and listed fields are not legally required arrest records.

How to Use the Jackson County Inmate Roster

The inmate search runs through the Sheriff's Zuercher portal. The link from the county is jackson-so-mo.zuercherportal.com. No login is needed. Most people just type a last name and hit Search. The portal then returns a list of matching inmates with a small photo, name, and basic data.

  1. Open the Jackson County inmate search portal. The page loads with empty filters.
  2. Type the inmate's name. A partial last name will work, but a full legal name returns a cleaner result list.
  3. Add filters if you get too many hits. Race, Sex, Cell Block, Arrest Date, Held For Agency, In Custody On, and Release Date all narrow the search.
  4. Click Search. Click any row to open the inmate profile with charges, cell block, and held-for agency.
  5. Click Reset to clear all filters and start a new search.

Names are not always entered the same way. Try a nickname, a hyphenated last name, or a middle name if the first try shows nothing. The portal does not search for aliases the way a state DOC system does. A blank result does not mean the person was never held; it can also mean the booking has not yet posted, the inmate was released earlier the same day, or the case has moved to a state or federal facility.

For repeat lookups, set the In Custody On filter to a specific past date. The portal then runs the search as of that date and may return inmates who have since been released. Pair the In Custody On filter with a name to confirm someone was held in Jackson County on a given day.

Jackson County Inmate Search Fields

The Zuercher inmate search lets you combine fields. All fields are optional, but you should set at least one to get a useful return. Date pickers handle the Arrest Date, In Custody On, and Release Date entries. Dropdown values for race, sex, cell block, and held-for agency are loaded from the portal's own control model and do not need to be typed by hand.

What a Jackson County Inmate Profile Shows

Each row in the result list opens a small profile. The profile mirrors the dataset the county classifies as public detention-center population data. It is short by design. Charging documents, plea entries, and sentence terms are court records, not detention records, and live on Case.net under Jackson County court records instead.

Jackson County Jail Facilities

The Jackson County Detention Center holds adult inmates on state charges, classification holds, and court-ordered holds while cases run. Jackson County opened a new detention center on March 19, 2026 after a public ribbon cutting. The official county release says the new facility is about 470,000 square feet and was designed with future expansion in mind so housing units and beds can be added if the population grows. People on Kansas City municipal matters are held at the separate Kansas City Regional Correctional Center, which is not part of the county roster.

Booking Process in Jackson County

Booking starts at the arresting agency, not at the Detention Center. The local police department prints, photographs, and writes the incident report. The Detention Center then takes the person in, runs classification, and assigns a cell block. The county notes that the Detention Center does not keep booking records of its own. Arrest records, mugshots from intake, and incident reports stay with the agency that made the arrest.

A first appearance in front of a 16th Circuit judge usually follows within 24 to 48 hours for state cases. Bond may be set, modified, or denied. Court-set bonds can be posted at Criminal Records, 1315 Locust Street, Kansas City, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Sheriff's instructions say to call 816-881-4201 option 5 before posting to verify the bond amount, and to call again right after posting so Records staff know the inmate should be processed. Detention staff do not otherwise see that funds were placed on account. Jackson County does not take Kansas City Police Department bonds; those go to KCPD at 816-234-5180.

Visitation Hours and Rules

All general public visitation at the Jackson County Detention Center is video visitation. Both on-site and remote visits run through the same video system. Visits are capped at 30 minutes. Every visit must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance and no more than 7 days in advance. Visitors must follow correctional officer instructions and may pass through a weapons detector or a frisk search. Outer garments such as coats, jackets, hoodies, sweaters, and hats must be removed before the visit; lockers are on site.

Visits are blocked if the inmate has a scheduled court, clinic, program, or professional appointment. Children must be supervised at all times. Visits can be denied, paused, or cut short for rule breaches or signs of impairment.

How to Contact a Jackson County Inmate

Video visits are scheduled through SmartJailMail at smartjailmail.com. First-time users register with an email address. The site asks for a current picture of the visitor's face and a picture of a government ID. The pictures verify the account holder and are not shown to the inmate. After the inmate accepts the connection, the visitor can schedule a local or remote visit.

  1. Go to smartjailmail.com and register with your email.
  2. Upload a current photo of your face and a photo of your ID.
  3. Request a connection to the inmate and wait for acceptance.
  4. Click Visitation, then Schedule a Video Visit.
  5. Pick Local Visit or Remote Visit, then choose date, time, and length.
  6. Confirm and schedule.

Phone account vendor and mail rules are posted on the Detention Center page. The county directs visitors to verify the current mail scanning policy before sending a letter. Some county jails route physical mail through a third-party scanning service that posts a digital copy to the inmate's tablet account.

Commissary and Inmate Funds

Jackson County uses Access Corrections for inmate funds. Card payments run 24/7 at accesscorrections.com. Phone deposits are accepted at 1-866-345-1884. A cash and card kiosk sits at 1300 Cherry Street, Kansas City. The kiosk charges a 7 percent vendor fee and will not take $1 bills. Additional vendor fees may apply to web and phone deposits as well.

Funds posted to commissary are used for snacks, hygiene items, phone time, and tablet credits the inmate can use for video visits and messaging. The county Detention Center does not issue refunds for unused balances if the inmate is transferred or released; that step runs through the vendor.

Check the deposit limit before you send funds. Vendors set a per-deposit cap and a daily cap to limit fraud and to slow down attempts to push money through outside accounts. Keep the receipt or transaction ID. If the deposit does not post within the vendor's stated window, call the vendor first. Detention Center staff cannot move funds on the vendor side and will route most fund questions back to Access Corrections.
